A long history, and a shorter one

Vitamin C has been studied longer than most medicines have even existed. Celin was there from the start — the first mainstream name in Vitamin C.

  1. 1747

    The first controlled trial

    James Lind divided twelve scurvy patients aboard HMS Salisbury into six treatment pairs. The two given citrus recovered. It is widely regarded as one of the first controlled clinical trials ever run — and it was about Vitamin C, a substance nobody had yet identified.

  2. 1932

    Ascorbic acid identified

    Albert Szent-Györgyi, who had isolated the compound in 1928, and Charles Glen King working independently identified it as the antiscorbutic factor. Haworth and Hirst determined its structure the following year and named it ascorbic acid — literally, the anti-scurvy acid.

  3. 1937

    A Nobel Prize

    Szent-Györgyi received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on biological combustion, with particular reference to Vitamin C. Walter Haworth shared the Chemistry prize the same year, in part for determining its structure.

  4. 80+ years

    Celin in India

    Within a few years of the molecule being synthesised at scale, Celin was on Indian pharmacy counters. It has not left them since — through four generations of pharmacists, and long before any of this became a wellness aisle.
